Job Opportunity: Executive Director, NC Military Foundation

Introduction. Led by some of the nation’s most distinguished military retirees and the state’s preeminent corporate citizens, the North Carolina Military Foundation is a privately funded, non-partisan economic development organization. It works on the strategic level to grow N.C.’s defense economy in a way that generates new long-term investment and job opportunities, primarily by leading high-impact strategic growth initiatives and positioning key organizations and senior leaders to protect and grow North Carolina’s defense economy.

Position Overview.  The Executive Director is the Foundation’s highest ranking official and a key leader in North Carolina’s defense sector support infrastructure. The Executive Director leverages the insight, access, influence, and perspective of the Foundation’s board of directors to lead high-impact growth initiatives and position the state’s most senior leaders to protect and grow North Carolina’s $66B defense economy. This is a highly visible position within North Carolina’s defense community and will provide an enriching path to tremendous growth and future executive leadership roles.

Duties and Areas of Responsibility.  Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:

  1. Developing insights and strategic perspectives on new opportunities and threats, driving the analyses, presenting the results, and collaborating with teams of organizations to develop and execute actionplans
  2. Managing a powerful board of retired general officers and corporate executives, leveragingtheir insight, access, influence, and perspective in support of various initiatives led by theFoundation or itspartners
  3. Developing and managing close working relationships with key stakeholders and thecommunity in support of the Foundation’sobjectives
  4. Serving as trusted advisor to senior leaders from government, industry, military, and academiaon defense sector issues and guiding their involvement in variousinitiatives
  5. Overseeing the Foundation’s administrative, financial and program operations, and allpersonnel matters
  6. Pursuing and incorporating additional revenue sources through a variety offundraising mechanisms, consistent with the organization’s mission
  7. Setting annual budgets, goals & objectives, etc. for review and approval by the Board ofDirectors
  8. Planning and executing Board Meetings and specialevents
  9. Executing the Foundation’s strategic plans within the limits prescribed by the organization’s bylaws and under the general direction of the Board of Directors

Skills and Qualifications.  Skills & Characteristics

  • Proactive, self-motivated, and results-oriented leader with strong planning, organization,critical thinking, and communication (verbal and written) skills
  • Extremely well-developed interpersonal and influence skills; ability to independently developand manage strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, driving progress through influence
  • Ability to structure communication and analyses for senior audiences from government,military, industry, and academia – including effectively using and understanding military terminology and acronyms.
  • Strong leadership characteristics; ability to collaboratively set strategic objectives and lead teams of organizations to achieve shared goals andobjectives
  • Strong professionalism, executive presence, tactfulness, empathy, and ethics, with the abilityto develop and maintain positive working relations with diverse and distant
  • Ability to remain apolitical, diplomatic, and focused on the long-term even in occasionally ambiguous or changing environments

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 7 years of total work experience, including formal team management andleadership positions
  • Bachelor’s degree required; relevant advanced degreepreferred
  • Background in economic development, industry associations, strategic planning, government relations, or related fieldpreferred
  • Fundraising or experience with new revenue generation aplus
