By Dr. William C. Harrison, Ed. D., Superintendent, Cumberland County Schools
One concern that any family would have when relocating is what kind of jobs are available for my spouse. The Cumberland County Schools (CCS) is the second largest employer in Cumberland County. We employ 6,713 people in full-time positions, with 3,465 as certified teachers. Including the part-time staff, we total more than 10,000 employees.
Our Human Resources Department is regarded by some as a national model for recruiting, developing, and retaining people. We recruit internationally to find the most highly qualified employees. Our community is very supportive of our efforts and has provided opportunities for new employees that may not be found in other areas of employment.
Salary supplements for new employees are 8.5 percent of one’s salary. CCS offers signing bonuses that range from $750-$4,000, which depends upon the area of certification. We are able to provide a waiver on utilities and cable service to new teachers. Some of our local medical offices provide free physicals. The Realtors help find affordable housing and offer reduced deposits and monthly rates. Waivers on the enrollment fees at some of our local health/fitness clubs are also available.
Once employed with the CCS, we provide a very informative New Teacher Orientation where teachers not only receive helpful information about the district, but also get to meet their colleagues who are new to our school system as well. A well-designed mentor program is available for new teachers. Mentors who are currently employed teachers or recent retirees are assigned to new teachers during their first year to provide helpful guidance. There is continued support through their third year. We also have a New Teacher’s Center that provides community information and financial gifts for school supplies.
After two years of employment with the CCS, a teacher is eligible to apply for a Master’s Degree Scholarship. National Board Certification is encouraged locally and supported by the NC Department of Public Instruction. Our local Board of Education offers a $500 stipend for those who complete the process.
We pride ourselves in being a district that holds Human Resources Development as one of our five strategic priorities. For more information about your opportunities in the CCS, please visit our web site at www.ccs.k12.nc.us.
