It’s easy to let your job search take a back seat during the summer.  The beach is beckoning, the kids are on vacation, the mountains are calling to you… But summer is also the perfect time to recharge your job search.

  1. (1)     Keep that Resume Updated!  Make sure that your current address, phone number, cell phone and e-mail address are included.  Update your references and your job description if anything has been added to your plate in the past few months.  Ensure that your contact information for your references is current for the summer months as well – for example, teachers may have different contact information, be on sabbatical, or even work from different offices during the summer.
  2. (2)     Update Your MatchForce.org Profile – after you’ve recreated your resume, make sure you update your profile online as well!  Update the date you are available (even if you’re saying to yourself “TODAY!”.. regularly update this for potential employer’s benefit), your resume, your contact information, and take a look at those keywords!  Keywords on MatchForce match you to your potential employment opportunities.  If you are seeking a nursing positions – good examples of keywords are: nurse, RN, registered nurse, nursing assistant, CNA, etc…
  3. (3)     Get organized – take this slow down during the summer to organize and reassess your finances.  Drop those companies from your credit card bills that have latched on with recurring monthly payments.  Streamline your finances – direct deposit, electronic bill pay, etc… One weekend of cleaning out those cobwebs can make you feel like you’re ready to conquer the world and the job search!  It can also leave you feeling more confident about your current financial situation.
  4. (4)     Take a Class, but don’t forget to add it to your resume!  Many community colleges offer special interest courses over the summer – not only are you doing something for you, you’re doing something for your resume as well!  Take that language or drafting class you’ve been thinking about – or even take a class in dance or drama to bring out your creative talents and public speaking skills!  Use the summer to reinvigorate yourself.
  5. (5)     Look at events as networking opportunities.  From the country club’s golf tournament, the neighborhood picnic, and even the family vacation to the lake or beach – everyone you cross paths with has the potential to know of that “perfect” job that is opening up or even be the one with the ability to hire.

While it may seem like the summer is the perfect excuse to allow your job search to slow down as well – these three months are the time when people are moving since the kids aren’t in school and changing jobs.  Taking the time to freshen up and “Spring Clean” your resume – might just land you the job of your dreams!
