Can your company help our bases achieve Net Zero Waste goals?
Senator Richard Burr, Senator Kay Hagan and the North Carolina Military Business Center (NCMBC) are pleased to host the 3rd Annual North Carolina Federal Environmental Symposium on June 13, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Bordeaux in Fayetteville, NC.
Can your company help our bases achieve Net Zero Waste goals?
What is Net Zero Waste?
A net zero waste installation is an installation that reduces, reuses, and recovers waste streams, converting them to resource values with zero landfill over the course of a year. The components of net zero solid waste start with reducing the amount of waste generated, re-purposing waste, maximizing recycling of waste stream to reclaim recyclable and compostable materials, recovery to generate energy as a by-product of waste reduction, with disposal being non-existent.
We will discuss how more recycling strategies are developed moving beyond metals, paper and cardboard to include mattresses, glass, plastics, batteries, computer printers and motor oil. The best strategy is to consider the waste stream when purchasing items, reduce the volume of packaging, reuse as much as possible, and recycle the rest. A true cradle-to-cradle strategy considers the end state at the time the purchase decision is made.

Can your company help our bases achieve their Net Zero Water goals?
What is Net Zero Water?
A Net Zero Water Installation limits the consumption of freshwater resources and returns water back to the same watershed so not to deplete the groundwater and surface water resources of that region in quantity and quality over the course of a year. The net zero water strategy balances water availability and use to ensure sustainable water supply for years to come. Strategies such as harvesting rain water and recycling discharge water for reuse can reduce the need for municipal water, exported sewage or storm water. Desalination can be utilized to convert briny, brackish or salt water to fresh water so it is suitable for human consumption or irrigation.
To achieve a net zero water installation, efforts begin with conservation followed by efficiency in use and improved integrity of distribution systems. WE will discuss how water is re-purposed by utilizing grey water generated from sources such as showers, sinks, and laundries and by capturing precipitation and storm water runoff for on-site use. Wastewater can be treated and reclaimed for other uses or recharged into groundwater aquifers.

Secretary Chu Announces $30 Million for Research Competition to Develop Next Generation Energy Storage Technologies
Secretary Chu Announces $30 Million for Research Competition to Develop Next Generation Energy Storage Technologies
The Dept. of Energy today announced a new $30 million research competition to improve energy storage devices for military applications and other uses.
“Underscoring President Obama’s commitment to energy security for America’s warfighters, and to a sustained, comprehensive strategy to ensure a secure energy future for all Americans, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu today announced a $30 million research competition that will engage our country’s brightest scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs in improving the performance and safety of energy storage devices, including hybrid energy storage modules being developed by the Department of Defense for military applications.”
The program is being done through DOE’s Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E).
According to the announcement, technologies being sought would have the potential to:
• Create a new generation of electric and hybrid-electric vehicles;
• Increase the fuel efficiency of military generators to help reduce the need for fuel-convoys on the battlefield
• Improve the reliability of military aircraft generators to help to reduce operation and maintenance costs
• Enable next generation high power weapons systems and fuel efficient operations for Navy ships; and
Enhance the efficiency and reliability of the U.S. electricity grid.

What is Net Zero Energy?
The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has long recognized the strategic importance of energy to its mission, and is working to reduce energy consumption as well as to enhance energy self-sufficiency by drawing on local clean energy sources. A joint initiative formed between DOD and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in 2008 to address military energy use led to a task force to examine the potential for net zero energy military installations, which would produce as much energy on-site from renewable energy generation, or through the on-site use of renewable fuels, as they consume in buildings, facilities, and fleet vehicles.
Energy conservation and efficiency projects will be discussed to identify economic approaches to minimizing energy demand. Renewable energy generation technologies are then examined for their potential to meet the remaining energy loads, and fleet fuel use is analyzed for opportunities to switch to alternative fuels or electric vehicles. This leads to recommendations and future opportunities for energy efficiency, renewable energy, and transportation energy projects.

Earth Day is just around the corner. Something to think about as we celebrate with events all over North Carolina.
According to the United States Census Bureau, each day 361,481 babies are born around the world. This past fall, one of those 361,481 babies bumped the world’s population to 7 billion.
When I was born 50 years ago the world’s population was 2 billion. A half-century later the disbelief continues with the addition of 5 billion people.
According to David Bloom, an economist at Harvard University, the world’s population grows by 80 million each year. Do the math, and that has the population tipping the scales at 9.3 billion by 2050. With this monumental influx of people calling our planet home, there is much at stake, including the unanswered questions on how it will affect our planet’s natural systems and our overall quality of life.
Currently our planet is challenged by unprecedented and complex issues like a climbing demand for clean water, melting glaciers, and a precipitous decline of pollinators, amphibians and many species of flora and fauna. As the population soars to new heights, we will continue to experience a depletion of our natural resources, but equally yet more threatening is its effect on our public health and social and economic growth. This is especially true since 97 percent of the aforementioned population swell will occur in developing countries.
Statistics show that people are living longer, but not necessarily better. People around the world struggle with hunger, fight for their right to clean water, and are given very few resources to make a change in their lives. Now with 7 billion people sharing the planet it has become more important than ever to create sustainable cities, which nurture economic growth, health and overall wellbeing. But that’s easier said than done. Of the ten most populated countries, 6 of the 10 are classified as developing nations and face an uphill battle to achieve these standards.
To create a balance between the environment, health and society in these crowded times, we must empower the people to improve their own lives and therefore become catalysts for progress. Though we are seeing a decline of our natural resources associated with the 7 billion people sharing the Earth, the resources provided by technology, forward thinking leaders will allow us to create the sustainable cities that are necessary for our planet’s longevity

Army Plans $7 Billion in Industry Partnerships for Renewables
Army Plans $7 Billion in Industry Partnerships for Renewables
The U.S. Army reported on March 19 that it will partner with industry to invest up to $7 billion over the next 10 years in renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, biomass, and geothermal energy. The military department has released a draft request for proposal (RFP) that could allow multiple projects to begin nationwide. The draft RFP indicates that the Army intends to primarily purchase renewable-generated electricity through power purchase agreements with the project developers.
The investment will help the Army reach its goal of having 25% of its estimated 2.5 million megawatt hours come from renewable sources by 2025. In addition to energy conservation, installations will strive to establish alternative forms of energy that will allow them to “island” or continue to operate should the power grid fail.
The Army’s Energy Initiatives Task Force (EITF) serves as the central managing office to plan and execute large-scale renewable energy projects of greater than 10 megawatts (roughly enough to power 30,000 homes) on Army installations, which will be accomplished by leveraging private-sector financing. A renewable-energy project guide will be issued for comment later in the spring.
The task force has been working closely with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to develop a request for proposal under the Multiple Award Order Contract (MATOC). The MATOC provides a two-step process. In the first step, companies submit initial proposals and qualifications that are not project-specific. The draft RFP for the MATOC is out for public comment until March 24. The EITF plans to have a summit in May to meet with industry and discuss the renewable-energy development guide as well as specific projects. DRAFT_W912DY11R0036-0000
