Every Friday, 0900 Eastern, grab your coffee, bring your ideas, and join the NC Defense Technology Transition (DEFTECH) Community for an open, informal, virtual “Coffee Call” to address your concerns and ideas regarding Innovation, Technology, and commensurate Leadership challenges.

Show up early at 0800 for the DEFTECH Early Bird or at the 0830 Opps Update to join the DEFTECH Team as we review current federal technology opportunities.

The Topic of Discussion:  Artificial Intelligence and Data Science enabling Educational Informatics for Soldier Training.

Guest Speaker Bio:  Dr. Randall Spain is a Research Scientist in the Department of Computer Science at North Carolina State University. He received his Ph.D. in Human Factors Psychology from Old Dominion University and BA in Psychology with a minor in Education from Christopher Newport University. He has 10 years of experience conducting training and human factors research for the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security. His research uses principles, theories, and methods of applied psychology (human factors, educational psychology, personnel psychology, experimental psychology, and psychometrics) to evaluate the impact of advanced training technologies (mobile, virtual, and game-based) on learning and performance.

Prior to joining the Center for Educational Informatics, Dr. Spain served as a research psychologist for the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) where he conducted research on emerging technologies, including intelligent tutoring systems, to support Soldier training. More recently, he served as a research psychologist at RTI International where he led a multi-year effort to examine and validate cognitive and noncognitive predictors of job performance for the Transportation Security Administration.

He has published in a number of peer-reviewed journals, including Military Psychology, Cognitive Technology, and Ergonomics, and co-authored several book chapters on design applications for intelligent tutoring systems and next-generation learning technologies. He currently serves as an associate editor for Military Psychology and a reviewer for Simulation and Gaming. Dr. Spain has received recognition for his research from the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society and the National Training and Simulation Association.
