SUMMARY:PFAS Impacts Everyone – Including Your Business
DESCRIPTION:Background. PFAS is a class of chemical substances that are widely used in industry and consumer products. Up to half of the total use of PFAS chemicals can be accounted for in the textile industry because their properties achieve breathability\, thermal stability\, and durability. PFAS is also used the aerospace\, automotive\, construction\, and electronics industries. \n\nAerospace: Interference-free communication\nAutomotive: Fuel lines\, seals\, and batteries\nConstruction: Construction materials\nElectronics: Semiconductors and batteries\nMedical technologies: Catheters\, stents\, needles\, and transdermal patches\nMedicines and pharmaceuticals: COVID-19 therapeutics and prescription medicines\nTextiles: Coatings for textiles\, apparel\, upholstery\n\nDuring production and use\, PFAS can migrate into the soil\, water\, and air. Most PFAS does not break down\, so it remains in the environment for a long time. \nScientific studies have shown that exposure to some PFAS in the environment may be linked to harmful health effects in humans and animals. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is working to determine how to better and more efficiently detect and measure PFAS\, how much people are exposed to PFAS\, how harmful it is\, and how to remove\, manage\, and dispose of PFAS.  In mid-March 2023\, EPA issued a Maximum Contaminant Level\, or an MCL\, for six PFAS chemicals in drinking water with the MCL for two classes of PFAS – PFOA and PFOS – at 4 parts per trillion\, finally providing regulatory clarity that had been lacking. EPA has also designated PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under the Comprehensive Environmental Response\, Compensation\, and Liability Act (CERCLA). \nThe United States Department of Defense (DoD) records confirm PFAS in groundwater and soil at nearly 400 bases with suspected contamination in groundwater at an additional 294 bases.  Several installations record some of the highest PFAS levels ever found in water or soil (nearly exceeding 1 million parts per trillion). In July 2022\, the U.S. DoD sent out a clarifying memorandum on the technical screening for PFAS using site specific regional screening levels (signed by Michael McAndrew Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Construction) \nThis webinar will introduce PFAS and include the following: \n\nIntroduction of Claros Technology (background\, how the company works with PFAS\, and their association with the Department of Defense)\nExplanation of PFAS and where it is found (sectors\, industries)\n\nImpacts of PFAS on various industries\nWhat can reasonably be done to decrease current levels\, mitigate the usage of PFAS now and into the future\n\n\nDiscussion of how PFAS is regulated (explanation of 4 PPT MCL\, its regulation of PFOA and PFOS under CERCLA). Regulatory authority more generally\nDiscussion of risks and how industries should address constituents (offsite/onsite\, move soil or not\, etc.)\n\nRegistration. This is a free webinar; however\, registration is required to receive log-in credentials. \nREGISTER

SUMMARY:"Grid Edge Security" Forum and Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:UNC Charlotte’s Center for Energy Security and Reliability (CESAR) Presents:\n“Grid Edge Security” Forum and Roundtable\nSave the Date – When: Monday\, 9 September 2024; 1:00pm-5:00pm\nWhere: Harris Alumni Center\, UNC Charlotte\, Main Campus \nThis event will consist of presentations followed by an interactive Round-Table discussion on the topic of Grid Security at the Edge and the Threat Environment. Cyber attacks pose growing\, multifaceted risks to the nation’s critical utility infrastructure and significant attention is focused on protecting the Bulk Electrical System (BES). However\, the increasing reliance on distributed sensors and devices operating at the edge of the BES represents a growing and evolving threat dynamic\, one replete with new\, emerging attack vectors. Examples of this class of devices include many behind-the-meter (BTM) distributed energy resources (DERs)\, such as batteries\, rooftop solar\, standby power systems\, and electric vehicles – systems called upon to assume an increasingly active role in grid management. There is also a growing class of sensors and controls opening new input channels\, thus enabling more attack vectors. \nCESAR\, an effort led by UNC Charlotte with support from NC A&T and NCSU\, is the result of a UNC System funded Research Opportunities Initiative (RO1). It intends to address the risks posed by “threats at the edge” by deploying two testbeds as resources for industry: \nThe Hardware in the Loop (HIL) Testbed \n\nA hardware tested enabling testing of actual internet-connected DERs while connected to a power_system simulator\n\nThe Large-Scale Integrated Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Testbed \n\nA software-based tested incorporating a transmission system model with many interconnected distribution circuits allowing the team to model loads DERs down to the level of individual residences.\n\nNo Cost to attend!
