SUMMARY:Lean 200: Applying the Fundamentals
DESCRIPTION:Course Details:\n2 days\, 14 instructional hours\nNo prior lean training or experience is required. \nFor location details and single session availability:\nREGISTER ONLINE \nAbout This Event:\nLean 200 encompasses two full days of hands on learning\, and equips participants with practical tools and strategies to make significant and sustainable changes within their organizations. This is a 2-day\, introductory course focused on the fundamental principles of Lean as well as the basic tools most organizations use to start their Lean journey. Participants will be led through an interactive simulation of an industry process to allow hands-on application and practice of the Lean tools and methodology. \nValue Stream Mapping is a tool used to create a material and information flow map of a product or process. This powerful tool allows organizations to map their procedures\, supplies or information from the beginning of the process through all process steps\, until the process is complete. These steps make up the value stream. You begin the journey with the current state map; it shows you where you are. Then\, you plan your lean journey with a future state map; it shows you where you’re going and how you’re going to get there. Based on your value stream map\, you can identify and prioritize what improvements to work on first\, so your process becomes streamline and efficient.  There is a case study during the class to help demonstrate a Value Stream Map \nDuring this course\, we will talk about 5S: Sorting\, Set-in order\, Shine\, Standardized\, and Sustain. 5S is a tool designed to improve workplace efficiencies by reducing waste associated with poor communication due to lack of visual controls and searching for items that are necessary to perform job tasks. There is also a hands-on simulation to demonstrate the application of 5S. 5S is a very quick and easy tool to implement within any workplace. \nStandardized work is necessary for any sort of improvement to begin. Have you ever noticed that everyone does things her/his own way? This practice can create issues concerning quality\, safety\, training of staff\, and more. Before a process can be improved\, it must be standard for everyone. During this course we will discuss the importance\, benefits and examples of standardized work. \nA3 for problem solving is a tool that Toyota is using to relentlessly improve operational performance. Central to this ability is the training of supervisors and managers in a structured problem-solving approach that uses a tool called the A3 problem-solving report. We will discuss the use of an A3 problem solving tool including when it is used\, how it is used and will include hands on practice for A3 creation. \nKaizen is our most popular tool!  Many organizations love the rapid and systematic way of looking at a process and\, with a team of co-workers\, determine how to improve the process and implement those changes in a quick and sustainable way.  Kaizen is a systematic methodology to run continuous improvement projects. The methodology for running an effective kaizen will be covered during this course. Also\, helpful hints from the front lines will be covered\, such as team selection\, pre-work\, and post-work. \nRecommended For:\nAny professional interested in learning more about lean applications. \nYou Will: \n\nIdentify and apply the basic lean tools\nRecognize improvements within their work areas through communication improvements\, morale improvements\, and quality improvements\nBenchmark other organizations throughout North Carolina starting the lean implementation\n\nTopics Covered Include:\n\nValue Stream Mapping\n5S\nStandard Work\nA3 for problem solving\nKaizen\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCourse Policies\n\n\nPayment Info\nCourse & Cancellation Policies\n\n\n\n\nLodging Info\nIES Preferred Hotels

SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn: Drones in Construction: More Than Just a Pretty Picture
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dr. Joseph M. Burgett aka “Dr. Drone” \nEvent Details:\nOver the past few years\, the use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems\, commonly referred to as “drones\,” has significantly increased in the construction industry. What started as a novelty toy to capture marketing images has become an invaluable tool for improving logistics\, reducing costs\, and supporting quality control. Drone-captured 2D images are now commonly used to create 3D models to document as-built conditions\, monitor progress\, and calculate material quantities. Incorporating aerial infrared thermography gives innovative contractors new insights into as-built conditions\, envelope integrity\, quality control\, and building energy performance. In this presentation\, Dr. Joe Burgett will discuss the opportunities\, challenges\, and barriers to leveraging drones in construction. He will also talk about the cost of starting a program\, and the steps contractors should follow to operate in the national airspace. \nEvent Contact: Caroline Brigmon\, Education Training & Workforce Development Director \nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Toyota Kata & PIT: Serious Fun!
DESCRIPTION:Just like a race car heading into the pit stall\, change arrives fast these days. Competitors emerge overnight\, new technologies alter the business and labor market conditions are uncertain. How do you ensure continued success in such complex\, dynamic and unpredictable conditions?\nThe default way people think about problems often involves jumping to conclusions and immediately seeking to solve problems\, because the brain does not like uncertainty. The unconscious part of our brain takes bits of surface information\, quickly extrapolates to fill in blanks and gives us a false sense of confidence in our conclusion. And then we start making costly mistakes. \nImagine how efficient your business would be if it operated like a motorsports pit crew? What if you could learn concepts to improve problem solving through experimental cycles and by making such problem solving techniques a regular habit? What if you found a program that could teach you how to relate the concepts of the pit stop back to your business? \nLook at Experimental Problem Solving in a Novel Way \nToyota Kata Overview\, taught at the Performance Instruction & Training (PIT) facility deep in NASCAR country\, does just that. The program challenges participants to look at problem solving in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand. This is provided through the pit stop experience\, a team-based event that is analyzed to evaluate performance\, identify learnings and make modifications for continuous improvement. \nPit Crew activities to Drive Home Concepts of Continuous Improvement \nLean + Kata leverages a combination of classroom presentation\, discussion and actual pit crew activities to drive home the concepts of continuous improvement\, problem solving\, efficiency\, preparation and teambuilding\, while addressing such topics as communication\, coaching and feedback\, role responsibility and work performance. \nWhat to Expect \nYou’ll start your day with an orientation to high performance motorsports\, followed by an activity where you become a pit crew member. This is followed by the class segment\, where we learn that kata is: \n\nDeveloping new habits and allowing people to think differently about problems and goals\nA way of working\, and of working together\nUsing scientific thinking as an ingredient to make teams and organizations more effective and successful\nDeveloping a culture of continuous learning and improvement at all levels through deliberate practice\n\nThe Improvement Kata helps develop fundamental skills of working like a scientist. The learner iterates or experiments his or her way toward a desired goal instead of deciding the way forward. This way of thinking and working helps people successfully deal with uncertainty and challenges. \nThe Coaching Kata is a repeating routine by which the teacher or coach gives the learner procedural guidance\, not solutions\, helping the learner successfully overcome obstacles and develop confidence. With Toyota Kata\, managers can develop their own coaching skills and their team members’ problem-solving skills simultaneously. \nInstructors \nThe lean team from NC State Industry Expansion Solutions facilitates the lean presentations and discussions. Senior level staff of PIT Instruction and Training facilitates the motorsports presentation and activity while professional pit crew members coach the teams. \nBenefits of Participating \n\nLearn and understand the concept of improvement kata and coaching kata to improve your business.\nBehave like a pit crew under pressure\, apply lean principles and observe your impact on performance.\nDiscover the importance of developing a culture of continuous process improvement in your organization.\n\nCost \n$1\,195 for the session and volume discounts are available for 2 or 3+ participants from the same company. \n  \n\n\nWho Should Participate \nWhether you are in a leadership position (manager\, supervisor\, front-line team leader) or a key technical resource (engineer\, technician)\, you are a great fit for kata training. Individuals who seek a unique perspective on problem solving and people involvement are encouraged to register. \nUpcoming Session \nMonday\, October 2\, 2023 \n\n8 a.m. – Greeting and Orientation\n8:30 a.m. – Lean Performance U. Presentation (breakfast provided)\n8:50 a.m. – Introduction to Kata\n9:15 a.m. – Baseline PIT Stop\n9:30 a.m. – Training Session: Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata\n12:15 p.m. – Lunch (provided)\n1 p.m. – Three PDCA Improvement/Experiment Cycles utilizing the PIT Stop Experience\n4 p.m. Debrief training and next steps\n4:30 p.m. – Depart PIT\n\nTraining Location \nPerformance Instruction & Training (PIT)\n156 Byers Creek Road\nMooresville\, NC 28117 \nRegister \nContact Your Regional Manager:\nncstateies.com/RM \nQuestions? \nCall Allison Godwin at 252.883.1729

SUMMARY:IWRP Quarterly Industry Day
DESCRIPTION:Description\nNaval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR) and Naval Information Warfare Centers (NIWC) Atlantic and Pacific announce the Information Warfare Research Project (IWRP) Consortium Quarterly Industry Day hosted by ATI—the IWRP Consortium management firm—at the Charleston Gaillard Center on Wednesday\, October 25\, 2023. The event will include a keynote address from Mr. Bradley C. Punch\, PEO Digital deputy technical director; IWRP program and consortium updates; technical briefs; and one-on-one breakout sessions with scheduled IWRP Consortium members. \nTechnical briefs presented during the IWRP Consortium Quarterly Industry Day will include a variety of topics focused on information warfare. It is anticipated that the topics will be the basis of upcoming Requests for Prototype Projects (RPPs) to IWRP Consortium members. This is not an RPP\, but for planning purposes only. A project will not be awarded from this announcement. In order to obtain more information regarding the below projects\, you must be a member of the IWRP Consortium. For more information on becoming an IWRP Consortium member\, please visit https://www.theiwrp.org. The purpose of this announcement is to provide members of the IWRP Consortium and industry in general advanced notification of government intent. \nThe Government anticipates soliciting one (1) Request for Prototype Project (RPP) for white papers\, enhanced white papers or full proposals via N65236-22-9-0001. The RPP topic will include a technical brief and one-on-one breakout sessions. The RPP topic consist of the following: \n1.24-LANT-1954 Tactical Networks Remote Monitoring (TNRM) 3.0: The government is seeking solutions to collect various data types on multiple afloat platforms for the purpose of monitoring a mix of networks\, servers\, storage devices\, virtual machines\, applications\, and configurations. Once collected\, the solution will need to visualize this collected data with dashboards and alerts locally for system administrator use on the afloat platform\, as well as transfer the data over low bandwidth\, high latency links\, also dealing with Denied\, Disrupted\, Intermittent\, and Limited (DDIL) conditions\, to shore for a centralized visualization showing all afloat platforms with the ability to select a single afloat platform and be presented with the specific afloat platform dashboards and alerts. The solution should require minimal-to-no afloat maintenance or system administrator engagement. It should consider the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, system modeling\, and automation technologies as an iterative out year improvement to allow for automated proactive resolution of anomalies identified within afloat systems and networks. \nThe government will be presenting three (3) Pre-Solicitation Collaborations (PSCs)\, which will include a short brief and one-on-one breakout sessions. The PSC topics consist of the following: \n1.MyNavy HR Chatbot: The government is seeking to develop a “chatbot” that leverages large language model (e.g. ChatGPT)\, generating humanlike interaction based on context that triages customers’ HR-related issues and tracks a variety of back-end performance metrics. \n2.Advanced Manufacturing for Electronic Components: NIWC Atlantic anticipates the need to identify and test alternative rapid manufacturing of electronics options due to obsolescence and continued supply chain constraints. The command would like to explore prototype solutions that provide advanced manufacturing capabilities to create circuit card assemblies\, capabilities like additive manufacturing\, and pick and place technology for example. \n3.Modular Cabinet Design: The government is seeking a technical feasibility study (i.e. white paper) for a modular cabinet design that will include cable management recommendations\, rear cabinet maintenance accessibility\, and recommended dimensions based on current “Commercial off the Shelf” Information Technology. The government will provide technical requirements. Based on the given requirements\, the technical feasibility study will provide a recommended integrated engineering solution to a modular cabinet design implementing a Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA). \n\nContact Information:\n\n\n\nContracting Office Address\n\n\nCHARLESTON PO BOX 190022\nNORTH CHARLESTON \, SC 29419-9022\nUSA\n\n\n\n\nPrimary Point of Contact\n\n\n\nGiancarlo Dumenigo \n  giancarlo.dumenigo.civ@us.navy.mil \n  Phone Number843-218-2375
