Critical Technology Areas

Check every sub-area your organization works in, then choose its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) and Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL). *

What do the Technology Readiness Levels (TRL) mean?
TRL 1
Basic scientific principles observed. Fundamental research begins.
TRL 2
Technology concept formulated. Practical applications identified.
TRL 3
Experimental proof of concept demonstrated through laboratory studies.
TRL 4
Components validated in a laboratory environment. Individual pieces work together.
TRL 5
Technology validated in a relevant environment that begins resembling operational conditions.
TRL 6
Prototype demonstrated in a relevant operational environment. Considered the beginning of serious transition activities.
TRL 7
System prototype demonstrated in an operational environment. Near field-ready.
TRL 8
Actual system completed, tested, and qualified for operational use.
TRL 9
Actual system proven through successful operational missions. Fully fielded capability.
What do the Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRL) mean?
MRL 1
Manufacturing implications identified. Basic manufacturing concepts considered.
MRL 2
Manufacturing concepts defined. Initial production approaches identified.
MRL 3
Manufacturing proof of concept demonstrated. Early processes evaluated.
MRL 4
Capability to produce NDAA compliant components in a laboratory environment.
MRL 5
Manufacturing processes demonstrated in a relevant environment.
MRL 6
Prototype manufacturing demonstrated. Processes becoming repeatable.
MRL 7
Manufacturing systems demonstrated in a production-representative environment.
MRL 8
Pilot production line established and capable of low-rate production.
MRL 9
Low-rate production proven. Quality, cost, and schedule are predictable.
MRL 10
Full-rate production demonstrated with lean, stable, repeatable manufacturing.

Applied Artificial Intelligence (AAI)

Develop and deploy AI that directly improves military decision-making, autonomy, planning, intelligence, logistics, cyber operations, and battlefield effectiveness.

Biomanufacturing (BIO)

Leverage biology and advanced manufacturing to produce materials, chemicals, medicines, fuels, sensors, and other biological products that enhance military readiness while strengthening domestic supply chains.

Contested Logistics Technologies (LOG)

Ensure military forces can move, sustain, repair, and resupply operations even when traditional supply chains are disrupted by enemy action.

Quantum & Battlefield Information Dominance (Q-BID)

Maintain information superiority by enabling secure communications, precise navigation, advanced sensing, and electromagnetic dominance in contested environments where GPS or communications may be denied.

Scaled Directed Energy (SCADE)

Develop affordable, producible directed energy weapons and supporting technologies capable of defeating threats with speed, precision, and low cost per engagement.

Scaled Hypersonics (SHY)

Develop and manufacture affordable hypersonic weapons and supporting technologies capable of operating at speeds exceeding Mach 5.
