FSPV: Fundamentals of Solar PV Design & Installation Course

February 19 @ 10:00 am - February 23 @ 5:00 pm

Course Description

This course instruction is dedicated to the technical aspects of solar photovoltaic (PV) design and installation. This includes a focus on system types, components, applications, design, and best practices for installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. The 5-day course is based on NABCEP’s Learning Objectives for NABCEP PV Associate. Students completing this course are eligible to sit for the North American Board of Certified Energy Professionals (NABCEP) PV Associate Exam.

Prerequisites: This is an introductory course and there are no prerequisites to take this course.

Course Length: 35 hours – 7 hours a day over 5 days

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to:

  1. Identify photovoltaic system components and system types
  2. Calculate electrical energy and power
  3. Identify optimum sites for solar electric systems
  4. Calculate electrical loads
  5. Correctly size system components
  6. Design series and parallel configurations for solar equipment
  7. Design a basic grid-tie PV system
  8. Estimate PV system energy production
  9. Understand PV system specification sheets
  10. Understand safety standards of installing PV systems
  11. Identify your competency level regarding the tasks on the NABCEP PV Associate Job Task Analysis and gauge readiness to take the NABCEP PV Associate Exam based on NABCEP PV Associate Learning Objectives.

Course Expectations: Attendance during at least 90% of the live presentation is required to receive a certificate of completion and register to sit for the NABCEP PV Associate Exam.

As a participant of the grant program, we expect that all participants that complete the course also complete the post-training survey.

NABCEP PV Associate Exam

Upon completion of the Fundamentals of Solar PV Design and Installation course, course attendees will be eligible to sit for the North American Board of Certified Energy Professionals (NABCEP) PV Associate exam. The NABCEP Associate Program recognizes individuals who have demonstrated knowledge of the fundamental principles of the application, design, installation, and operation of Photovoltaic energy systems.

As the market grows for Photovoltaic technologies, individuals with a NABCEP Associate Credential enhance their employment opportunities with distinguished resumes. Employers have confidence they are hiring or promoting someone who is committed to the profession, and who has a proven understanding of the basic terms and operational aspects of a Photovoltaic system.

Passing a NABCEP Associate exam qualifies an individual to design, sell, install, or maintain systems in a supervised capacity.

Who Should Attend

This opportunity is extended to individuals who are either a part of Native American communities or serve Native American communities as well as historically underserved, and underrepresented populations including People of Color, women, veterans,  individuals with disabilities, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community.

These courses are recommended for the following groups:

  • Skilled professionals transitioning careers into the solar or renewable energy industry
  • Educators from universities, colleges, and community colleges
  • College students pursuing a career in solar or renewable energy
  • Solar technical professionals
  • Energy professionals
  • Engineers
  • Electricians
  • Contractors
  • Roofers

Course Cost

These virtual courses are being offered FREE thanks to the NC Clean Energy Technology Center (NCCETC), PowerAmerica, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Rapid Assistance for Coronavirus Economic Response (NIST-RACER) grant. The cost to sit for the NABCEP Associate PV Exam has been waived for those who attend the FSPV course.
